What Is SEO? A Plain-English Guide for South African Businesses
By Glimpse SEO Agency, Durban Central · Published
SEO, or search engine optimisation, is the work of getting your website to show up higher in Google's free results for the searches your customers make. It comes down to three things: what's on your pages, how well your site is built and how much other websites trust you. Do those well and Google sends you customers without charging you per click.
How does Google decide which websites rank?
Google works in three steps, which its own SEO starter guide explains in more detail:
- Crawling. Google's bots find your pages by following links.
- Indexing. Google reads each page and stores what it's about.
- Ranking. When someone searches, Google picks the pages that best answer the question, weighing relevance, quality, usefulness and trust.
SEO helps at every step: making pages easy to find, easy to understand and worth ranking.
What are the main types of SEO?
| Type | What it covers |
|---|---|
| On-page SEO | The words, headings and structure of each page |
| Technical SEO | Speed, mobile, crawlability and schema markup |
| Off-page SEO (link building) | Links and mentions from other trusted websites |
| Local SEO | Your Google Business Profile, reviews and local pages |
| E-commerce SEO | Product and category pages for online stores |
| AI SEO (GEO and AEO) | Being cited in AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini |
Most businesses need a mix. A Durban plumber leans on local SEO. An online store leans on e-commerce SEO. Everyone needs the technical basics. For the AI side, see our AI Overviews, GEO and AEO guide.
What does SEO look like when it works?
One example from our own clients: ZuZanna's Wellness, an online health food store, ranks first on Google for "healthy rusks to buy", and that work drove a 384% increase in sales over six months. Not every business sees numbers like that, but it shows what happens when the right page ranks for a search people are ready to buy from.
How long does SEO take?
Usually three to six months before rankings and traffic move meaningfully, with the bigger gains building over six to twelve months. Technical fixes can show results within weeks. Competitive searches in big cities take longer than niche searches in one suburb.
How much does SEO cost in South Africa?
Most fully managed SEO in South Africa costs between R2,499 and R15,999 a month in 2026, depending on how competitive your market is, how many keywords you're targeting and whether AI SEO is included. Our own Pro SEO package starts at R9,999 a month and Enterprise at R15,999.
Can you do SEO yourself?
The basics, yes. Start here:
- Set up and complete your Google Business Profile.
- Give every service its own page, with the service and area in the heading.
- Write a clear answer to each page's main question in the first few sentences.
- Make sure your site loads fast on a phone.
- Ask every customer for a review. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews covers the rules.
- Sign up for Google Search Console (free) to see what you rank for.
Where it gets harder is technical work, link building and competitive markets. That's usually when it's worth bringing in help. If you're still planning a site, our guides on what a website costs in South Africa and hosting and .co.za domains cover the groundwork.
Is SEO better than Google Ads?
They do different jobs. Google Ads puts you at the top today and stops the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months to build but keeps bringing in traffic without a per-click cost. Most businesses do best running ads for quick leads while SEO builds underneath.
