How Much Does a Website Cost in South Africa? 2026 Prices, Including Durban

By Glimpse SEO Agency, Durban Central · Published

Most small businesses in South Africa pay somewhere between about R3,500 and R25,000 once-off for a professional website in 2026. Online stores and custom builds start around R7,500 and can run well past R100,000. SME Rocket's 2026 survey of 56 South African web designers put the average five-page website at R6,634. On top of the build, budget for a domain, hosting and some maintenance every year.

So why do quotes for "a website" range from R1,500 to R150,000? Because they're quoting for different things. This guide breaks down website design prices in South Africa by type, shows what Durban agencies charge (our own prices included) and lists the costs nobody mentions until the invoice arrives.

What do web designers in Durban charge?

Durban prices sit inside the same national ranges. Here are ours, so you have a real benchmark rather than a vague range. (We're Glimpse, so treat this section as our pricing, not a market survey.)

Full details are on our web design Durban page. Other Durban options exist at both ends: Web Design Concepts in Phoenix advertises plans from R99 a month, and larger agencies quote well above our Enterprise tier for complex builds.

What makes a website cost more?

  • Page count. Every page needs writing, designing and building.
  • Custom design versus a template. A tweaked template is quicker and cheaper. A design built around your brand takes longer.
  • Copywriting. If you're supplying the words, the price drops. If the agency writes them, and writes them to rank, it goes up.
  • E-commerce. Products, payment gateways and delivery rules add work. Shopify Payments isn't available in South Africa, so stores connect to PayFast, Yoco, Ozow or Peach Payments instead.
  • Integrations. Booking systems, CRMs, stock feeds and client portals.
  • Languages. A site in English and isiZulu or Afrikaans is effectively two sites.

What does a website cost to run each year?

Ongoing costTypical priceNotes
.co.za domainAbout R85 to R110 a yearWatch the renewal price, not the first-year special
HostingAbout R50 to R200 a month for a small siteShopify and Webflow include hosting in their plan fees
Maintenance and updatesAbout R500 to R2,800 a monthSecurity updates, backups, small changes
SEO (optional)From about R2,500 a monthOnly if you want the site to bring in traffic

Hosting and maintenance ranges from DigiBannister's 2026 cost breakdown. Glimpse hosting is R150 a month.

Is a cheap website worth it?

Sometimes. A R1,500 template site is fine for testing an idea. But check three things before you pay anyone. Is the domain registered in your name? Will you get full access when it's done? And can you see two or three live sites they built that load quickly on a phone? If the answer to any of those is no, the low price is costing you something you can't see yet.

Be wary of "website rental" deals with no end date. Paying R400 a month forever for a site you never own costs more than a once-off build within two or three years.

How do you get an accurate website quote?

Send every designer the same short brief so you can compare like with like:

  • What the site needs to do (bring in calls, take bookings, sell products)
  • Roughly how many pages, and which ones
  • Whether you're supplying text and photos
  • Any must-have features (payments, bookings, WhatsApp, a portal)
  • Your deadline and budget range
