How to Get More Google Reviews Without Breaking Google's 2026 Rules
By Glimpse SEO Agency, Durban Central · Published
To get more Google reviews, ask every customer, soon after the job, with a direct link to your review form, and reply to every review you get. What you can't do since Google's April 2026 policy update: ask only happy customers, offer anything in return, put a review tablet on your counter, set staff review quotas or tell customers what to write, including asking them to name an employee.
Reviews feed straight into your Google Business Profile. If you haven't set that up properly yet, start with our Google Business Profile guide for Durban businesses.
Why do Google reviews matter so much?
Three reasons. Google's local ranking guidance says review count and score count towards how prominent your business is in local results. Reviews now feed the AI summaries Google writes about businesses on Maps. And people read them before they phone you.
How do you find your Google review link?
Open your Google Business Profile while signed in, find "Ask for reviews" (sometimes "Get more reviews") and copy the short link. Save it somewhere your whole team can reach it. That link takes customers straight to the review form, which removes most of the friction.
When and how should you ask for a review?
Ask within a day or two of the job, while the experience is fresh. In South Africa, WhatsApp usually gets the best response because it's how customers already talk to you. Email and SMS work too. A QR code on an invoice or a card the customer takes home is fine. Standing over them while they do it on the spot is not.
Here's a WhatsApp message that stays inside Google's rules:
"Hi Thandi, thanks for choosing us this week. If you have a minute, we'd appreciate a Google review of your experience: [your link]. Thank you!"
Notice what's missing: no request for five stars, no staff names, no "tell people how fast we were". Neutral is the point.
What did Google ban in April 2026?
Google updated its review policy on 16 and 17 April 2026. Here's where things stand:
| Practice | Allowed? |
|---|---|
| Asking every customer for a review after the job | Yes |
| Sending your review link by WhatsApp, SMS or email | Yes |
| Replying to every review, good or bad | Yes, and recommended |
| Asking only customers you think are happy (review gating) | No |
| Discounts, vouchers or competition entries for reviews | No |
| Asking for five stars or telling customers what to write | No |
| Asking customers to mention a staff member by name | No (new in April 2026) |
| Staff targets or bonuses per review | No (new in April 2026) |
| Review kiosks or a shared tablet on your premises | No |
| Reviews from staff, family or friends | No |
A customer who mentions your staff member by name on their own is fine. What's banned is the business prompting it.
How should you reply to Google reviews?
Reply to all of them. For good reviews, thank the person and mention something specific about the job. For bad ones, stay calm, apologise for the experience, and take it offline with a phone number or email.
One South African point: don't reveal a customer's personal details in a public reply. Order numbers, addresses, account information or anything else that identifies them can put you on the wrong side of POPIA. Keep replies general and move the detail to a private conversation.
Can you remove a bad Google review?
Not because you disagree with it. You can report a review that breaks Google's policies (spam, a fake review, offensive content, a conflict of interest) through your Business Profile, and Google decides. A calm, professional reply to a fair complaint often does more for your reputation than the review does damage.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for Google reviews or offer a discount for one?
No. Any incentive in exchange for a review breaks Google's policy, and Google can remove the reviews and restrict your profile.
Can I ask customers to leave a 5-star review?
No. Since April 2026 Google treats asking for a specific rating or specific content as rating manipulation. Ask for an honest review instead.
Can my staff be named in Google reviews?
Yes, if the customer does it on their own. You can't ask customers to mention a staff member, and you can't set staff review targets.
How many Google reviews do I need?
There's no magic number. Look at the top three businesses in your category on Google Maps in your area. Matching their count, and staying recent, is a sensible target.
Can I put a QR code for reviews in my shop?
A QR code on an invoice, receipt or card the customer takes away is fine. Pressuring customers to review on the spot, or using a shared tablet on the premises, is not.
