Google Business Profile: A Practical Guide for Durban Businesses (2026)

By Glimpse SEO Agency, Durban Central · Published

A Google Business Profile is the free listing that puts your business on Google Maps and in the local results when someone searches "electrician near me" or "dentist Umhlanga". It's what most people still call Google My Business. You manage it at business.google.com, and for a business that serves local customers it's often the first thing people see, before they ever reach your website.

This guide covers setting one up, getting it verified, what actually moves it up the map results in Durban and what changed on the platform in 2025 and 2026.

Is Google Business Profile the same as Google My Business?

Yes. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile in 2021. Same listing, same place on Maps, new name. People still search for "Google My Business" far more than you'd expect, so if a supplier or a staff member uses the old name, they mean this.

How do you set up a Google Business Profile?

It takes about 20 minutes, plus however long verification takes.

  1. Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account the business controls. Not a staff member's personal Gmail.
  2. Search for your business name. If a listing already exists (Google sometimes creates them from public data), claim it rather than creating a duplicate.
  3. Choose your primary category. This is the single most important setting on the profile, so pick the one that describes what you are, not everything you do.
  4. Add your address if customers visit you. If you go to them (plumbers, mobile mechanics, cleaners), hide the address and set service areas instead, such as Umhlanga, Westville, Pinetown and Ballito.
  5. Add your phone number and website, then follow Google's verification prompts.

How does verification work in 2026?

Google chooses the method based on your business type and history. Depending on the listing, that can be a phone call, a text, an email or a short video recording showing your signage, premises or equipment and something that proves you manage the business. Postcards are now rare. Some profiles verify in minutes. Others take a couple of weeks if Google asks for more evidence.

Changing your business name, address, category or ownership can trigger re-verification, so make those changes deliberately. Google also asks for more proof if your profile details don't match what it finds elsewhere online, which is one more reason to keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere.

What helps a Google Business Profile rank higher in Durban?

Google says local results are based on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the person searching) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are). You can't move your premises, so the work goes into relevance and prominence. Here's what matters most, according to Google's own local ranking guidance and what we see working for Durban clients.

What changed on Google Business Profile in 2025 and 2026?

Quite a lot. These are the changes that matter for a Durban business:

  • Q&A is gone, Ask Maps replaced it. Google discontinued the Q&A API on 3 November 2025 and the public Q&A section has been disappearing since. Its replacement, Ask Maps, is a Gemini-powered feature that answers customer questions using your profile, your reviews and your website. You can't write the answers directly anymore, so the information has to be clear on the profile and the site.
  • WhatsApp is now a contact option. Google retired Business Chat and, from April 2026, lets businesses add WhatsApp to their profile. In South Africa, where customers would rather WhatsApp than phone, switch this on.
  • Review rules got stricter. On 16 and 17 April 2026 Google banned staff review quotas and asking customers to mention specific content, including employee names. Review kiosks and review gating were already banned and are now enforced more actively.
  • Verification got tougher. Birdeye's 2026 guidelines review notes more scrutiny on ownership, location and profile changes.

How do you get your Google Business Profile into AI answers?

Ask Maps and Google's AI Overviews both pull from the same pool: your profile, your reviews and your website. So the work is mostly consistency. Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on your profile, your website footer and directories like Yellow Pages SA or Snupit. List your services on the profile and give each important service its own page on your website. And answer the questions customers actually ask, in plain sentences, on your site.

What gets a Google Business Profile suspended?

  • Keywords in the business name. "Mike's Plumbing Durban Best 24 Hour Plumber" is a guideline violation. Use your real trading name.
  • Virtual offices and fake addresses. A shared office you don't staff, or a friend's address in a better suburb, will get flagged.
  • Duplicate profiles for the same location.
  • Fake or incentivised reviews, including reviews from staff and family.
  • A category that doesn't match the business.

If you're suspended, fix the problem first, then request reinstatement through the profile. Google's guidelines for representing your business are the reference for what's allowed.

Should you post updates on your Google Business Profile?

Yes, but don't overthink it. A post a month with a real photo (a finished job, a new product, a seasonal offer) keeps the profile looking active, and posts now feed Google's AI summary of your business. Photos of real work beat polished stock photography every time.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile costs nothing. Google Ads and Local Services Ads are separate paid products.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

It ranges from a few minutes to a few weeks. Video and phone verification are usually quickest. If Google asks for more evidence, it can take longer.

Can I have a Google Business Profile without a physical address?

Yes. Service-area businesses can hide their address and list the areas they serve instead, such as Durban North, Berea and Amanzimtoti. You still need a real address for verification.

Why isn't my business showing on Google Maps?

The usual causes are an unverified or suspended profile, the wrong primary category, a new profile with no reviews yet, or searchers being further away than competitors. Check verification status first.

Can I add WhatsApp to my Google Business Profile?

Yes. Since April 2026 Google lets businesses add WhatsApp as a contact option, replacing the old Business Chat feature.
